Deadly Denim kick off SBS episodes

8th April 2021

In partnership with SBS, IBA is proud to showcase a series of segments with strong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses. The first in the SBS Small Business Secrets series featured on Sunday 4 April with Rebecca Rickard from Deadly Denim.

The Ballardong Whadjuk woman from the Nyungar nation is creating denim jackets, incorporating Indigenous artwork. Rebecca talked to SBS about sustainable fashion, helping community, and following her passion. She recently had her work showcased at the NY Fashion Week as an emerging international designer.

“Showcasing [Indigenous art] anywhere you can outside of Australia is really important, to shine a light on the amazing diversity we have amongst our First Nations people here,” Rebecca says. “Being the world’s oldest living culture, I get such goosebumps and pride from that.”

IBA’s Nini Mills said, “She comes from a strong Aboriginal culture and background, and as a single mother she has been able to intertwine her responsibilities for her family and the broader community.”

Supporting Indigenous businesses doing what they do best is always a highlight for us.

Every weekend in April, SBS will feature one of our amazing business customers so watch out for the upcoming segments with My Dilly Bag, hardyhardy, and Saltwater Eco Tours!
