18th August 2025

Tamika Murphy, a proud Bidjara, Jinibara, Wiradjuri, Ngunnawal woman shares what strength means to her, both personally and culturally. Her reflection speaks to the heart of leadership, legacy and connection. These are values carried by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in business. Her story reminds us of the power we hold when we stand firm in who we are and use our voices to shape a better future.

What it means to be a Strong Women

“I am a proud and strong, Bidjara/ Jinibara, Wiradjuri/ Ngunnawal woman. This means embracing resilience and courage in the face of adversity. It’s about standing tall in my identity, culture, and beliefs, while also lifting those around me. I always try to use my strong voice to advocate for justice, equality, and the rights of my people. I draw strength from my parents and ancestors, celebrating my Aboriginal culture, and paving the way for future generations to thrive. To me it also means nurturing my spirit, honouring my wellbeing, and knowing when to seek support from my community.”

What does this years NAIDOC theme means to you?

“This year’s NAIDOC theme resonates with me deeply ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy’. As I reflect on the legacy I’m creating for the next generation, I think of those that have helped me in my journey. It’s a reminder of my responsibility to empower our youth with the strength of our cultural knowledge, the vision to dream big, and the wisdom to build a better future. It means ensuring I can do my best so that our children have access to education, healthcare, and opportunities that honour their potential. This theme is about celebrating the resilience and achievements of our young people, while also acknowledging the challenges they face and working together to overcome them. It’s about fostering a sense of pride, identity, and belonging, so they can walk confidently into their future, carrying forward the legacy of our ancestors. I hope to leave a legacy behind that my nieces and nephews can look up to, one filled with cultural pride and strength.”

As Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in business, we continue to build legacies that honour our past and inspire our future. May we keep lifting each other, creating space for the next generation to thrive, and walking forward with strength, pride and purpose.
